I dare you not to fall in love with both Landon Evans and Katie Jenson and their emotionally gripping story of friendship, love, loss, and forgiveness. Embodied within this second chance romance storyline you’ll find a treasure trove of pure delights and “feels” that will satisfy any reader’s desires. It will most assuredly tug at your heartstrings. The story behind how Landon Evans becomes “Lucky” created a need for Kleenex and a step away from the computer for a moment of composure. And you’ll find an extra treat in the addition of some terrific secondary characters that only add more depth and delight to this one.
S.D. Hendrickson brought this story to life on the pages. Set in the college town of Stillwater, Oklahoma, I truly connected and became a part of this story when it prompted so many personal feelings and familiarity for me. Not only is Stillwater the home of my beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys, but Oklahoma is my home state and when Lucky performs in Tulsa, it’s a nod to where I live and breathe each day. It was such fun to revisit special landmarks with both Lucky and Katie.
While Lucky tries to make his dreams of a country music career come true with the full support of his family, Katie is searching for permanence and roots in her life after having grown up moving from place to place without much parental support in the process. While written in Katie’s POV, there’s still plenty of creative insight into Lucky’s emotions as well. Front and center are the dazzling original lyrics written by this author for Lucky’s music which were a direct hit to my heart. His songs alone make this a MUST READ (one especially)!
From their first encounter, Lucky and Katie absolutely belonged together. You could feel the beginning of something wonderful spark from first glance. Since it was on Halloween night – it could have been a magic potion provided by the bartender. Complete opposites in so many ways, but as their friendship grew into a deeper connection it was evident they were true soul mates. So many parts to their saga will captivate your attention. A balance of both smiles, laughs, oohs and aahs, along with the frowns, gasps, hurt, sadness and tears offer readers a full look into this couple’s relationship through the years.
When that big dose of ugly “angst” raises its head triggering an eight-year separation between Lucky and Katie, the story takes a nosedive into some tempestuous and trying times. The timeline provides readers with a view of our main characters from their early twenties where Katie has just graduated from college and beginning her career in teaching, while Lucky is working construction for his brother and trying to establish himself in the world of country music. Written so that surprising details are unveiled at the most unexpected moments allows the author to catch readers off-guard with a few twists and turns. Count on a broken heart before the author pieces it back together with a perfect blend of adorable, sweet, tender and spicy. When all is said and done, you’ll get a double dose of that lovin’ feeling when Lucky and Katie are once again reunited as they stare their thirties in the face.
For me, each of Hendrickson’s three books has certainly proven to be such a wonderful and unique reading treat. There’s a refreshing quality in the tone of her writing that is engaging, witty, and endearing just like her characters. They are real, down-to-earth, and likable with believable life experiences. She fast became an auto-click author. Every book leaves me hypnotized and pleading for more. She continues to amaze me with each book she publishes and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!
A beautiful and conclusive Epilogue ensuring our couple their well-earned happily-ever-after left my heart and soul very happy and me wearing a grin ear-to-ear.
Outstanding and well done! I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy and escaping into a terrific standalone story!
Disclosure: I had the honor and pleasure of beta reading for S.D. Hendrickson on what I’m claiming personally as some of “my lucky days.”
