Book Blurb:

There were two brothers—identical twins—and though I loved them both, my soul belonged to only one.

Annalia Del Valle has loved Preston Sawyer all her life. The daughter of an impoverished migrant farmworker, she grew up as an outcast in what was no more than a tiny, cooped up shack in California’s Central Valley. But her heart found freedom in the land, in the wide-open spaces of Sawyer Farm, and in the boys who were her only friends.

Preston has yearned for Annalia since he was a boy. But a sense of honor kept him from pursuing her until he’s unable to hold back any longer and their worlds—and bodies—collide one hot summer night. A night that sets off a chain of events that will alter their lives forever.

Now Annalia is back in town after disappearing without a trace for six long months. Determined to reclaim her heart, her life, and the baby she left behind—the son who was created in a moment of lust and love and pent-up yearning.

Preston has survived grief, a ravaging drought, and the despair of heartache, but he’s not sure he can survive Annalia again. And he might be unwilling to try. Will pride and bitterness keep him from the one thing he’s always longed for?

How do you heal what is irreparably broken? How do you forgive that which is unforgivable? How do you discover that real honor comes not from circumstance, but from the place deep in our hearts where truth resides? And how do you move beyond the wounds of the past to discover that some loves are as solid as the ground beneath your feet, and as enduring as the earth itself?

Sheridan’s impeccable writing makes for effortless reading while she spins this tale with perfect pacing. Packed into this coming of age novel full of emotions are also some tremendously thought-provoking themes which elevate this beyond an ordinary story. Emotional acumen, along with witty banter will most likely bring readers both smiles and tears.

From within the pages, a complicated story develops that sees our characters from childhood through the teenage years, and into their young adulthood. It is centered around identical twins that might look alike, but very different personalities and highly competitive. And they both love a girl named Annalia (Lia). Lia, our beautiful heroine, both inside and outside, is far more mature and self-sufficient for such a young person who grew up faced with poverty and loneliness. And Lia loves them both, too – only in very different ways.

The Sawyer twins are easy on the eyes and easier to love. They’ve grown up in a successful farming family. Each has his own endearing characteristics and qualities that draw your attention in completely different ways. The story is not without drama, angst and sadness. But it is also full of love and kindness beyond their own backyards. So much of this story had me tied in knots.

These relationships are riddled with conflicted feelings and loyalties. The book includes so much more than just a friends to lovers romance. While it may appear that there is a love triangle brewing, there isn’t. And it may also seem like a second chance at love, but again, no. It’s just a case of an imperfect love story. Adding to the mix are the complexities of everyday life that include community cultural and socioeconomic differences along with the prejudices that attach thereto that also play major roles in this heart and soul story.

Mia Sheridan has masterfully created a very special message woven with love and forgiveness. She writes each page of this extraordinary love story with deep meaning and feelings on many different levels. In my view, this is one of those far and few between discoveries that squeezes your heart in more ways than you can imagine.
