Lauren Riley is an accomplished detective who has always been on the opposite side of the courtroom from her nemesis, slick defense attorney Frank Violanti. But now he’s begging to hire her as a private investigator to help clear his client of murder. At first Lauren refuses, wanting nothing to do with the media circus surrounding that case—until she meets the eighteen-year-old suspect.
To keep an innocent teen from life in prison, Lauren must unravel the conflicting evidence and changing stories to get at the buried facts. But the more she digs, the more she discovers that nothing is what it first appears to be. As Lauren puts her career and life in danger, doubt starts to lurk on every corner . . . and so does her stalker.
Book Review by 2shay……….
As a recently retired Buffalo, NY homicide detective, Lissa Marie Redmond has hit a home run with her first novel. It’s well written and completely believable. She made we wonder how much of her life is reflected in her heroine’s.
Lauren Riley is flawed, and that makes her perfect. Divorced twice with two daughters in college, she is not a naive young woman. She’s savvy and smart. She’s also capable of making mistakes. One of those mistakes was detective Joe Wheeler, a man she almost married until his dark side emerged and he became abusive. She left him, but he now hates her and would do almost anything to hurt her. When they wind up on opposite sides of a case, Joe’s fury is boundless.
Then there is Mark, her second husband. Mark Hathaway, the love of Lauren’s life who left her after getting his secretary pregnant. Oh, Lord! Lauren still loves him and he swears he still loves her, but what rational woman can ever trust a man who cheated on her? Heaven forbid!
My personal favorite of the men in her life is Shane Reese, her partner in the Cold Case squad. They work well together and have cleared a lot of cold cases. I think Reese has a major crush, or more, for Lauren, but she’s doesn’t have a clue. I guess we’ll have to wait for future books to see if anything comes of that.
Lauren has a second profession. As well as being a kick butt homicide detective, she’s a licensed private investigator. Her second job is at the heart of this story as she accepts a job from a defense attorney, Frank Violante. They don’t like each other…at all. They’ve been on opposite sides several times and Lauren has managed to be on the winning side…every…single…time. But Lauren is intrigued by his willingness to beg for her help, he offers her a huge retainer, and she accepts. After meeting David, the young man accused of murder, Lauren is convinced and takes the job.
I can’t say much more without giving away major spoilers. I will say that this book is memorable in its, well…it’s simplicity. I don’t mean there aren’t complications, that would be boring and this book is not boring. In fact, I read it straight through. We travel with Lauren in her day-to-day life, solving cold cases, working to help free what she believes is an innocent 18-year-old boy, visits from her daughters and all the detritus from her past. We learn how strong she is…raising her girls on her own, making a life for them and herself. She’s a great heroine. I am looking forward to many adventures with Lauren Riley and her supporting cast as told by a wonderful new author. Pick up a copy and…
